Detection by PCR of Anaplasma in Danish Roe deer

Ehrlichiosis, caused by Anaplasma (formerly Ehrlichia) phagocytophilia
is an important emerging tick-borne infection. The role of Roe deer (Capriolus
capriolus) in the epidemiology of ehrlichiosis in Denmark was investigated.
Blood samples were collected during the hunting season (15/5- 15/7 ’02
and 1/10- 15/1 ’03) from 22 Danish forest districts. Blood samples from
237 Roe deer were tested for Anaplasma phagocytophilia genogroup 16S rRNA gene
sequences by PCR. Overall a mean of 47% Roe deer were found Anaplasma positive
in PCR. Marked seasonal variation in PCR positive Roe deer was found between
the two hunting periods (71% vs. 26%). These findings confirm that roe deer
are commonly infected with Anaplasma and provide evidence that roe deer are
a major reservoir of Anaplasma in Denmark. CRZEE - Extended Abstracts
